Chapter 19

Academy

Jarven considered this information for a moment. "Don't you run the risk of them finishing their course and then simply disappearing?"

Kyron shrugged. "We shall have to monitor the situation, but, generally speaking, I don't think it will be a serious problem. The main problem most of them will find is there will be an ever-increasing number of magicians competing for spots to make a living in the cities and towns here in Marhingia and in the surrounding Kingdoms. On the other hand, with more trained magicians available, I expect you will find that undertaking tasks that any self-respecting magician currently wouldn't consider will become a lot more attractive."

Jarven cocked his head slightly to one side. "Such as?"

Kyron smiled to himself as he realized the older magician had stopped using their royal titles as the magical discussion continued.

"Well, magicians would be very useful in construction, for instance. Think of all the elaborate scaffolding, ropes, and awkward cranes that are needed to build, say, a city wall. How much easier would it be for those constructing the wall if a magician could levitate the blocks up to where they needed to be positioned so that the workers only needed to push them into place? The same applies to large houses or buildings, particularly those of two or more stories."

Kyron paused as it wasn't something he'd really given a lot of thought to himself, he realized. He smiled at Jarven.

"Think of how much easier it will be for people repairing house roofs, or even installing house roofs if someone on the ground is levitating the tiles or shingles up to roof level rather than the builder having to physically carry them up or hoist them up with ropes and such." He grinned. "At the moment, those sorts of tasks are considered too demeaning for a highly trained magician, but if there are suddenly three times as many magicians floating around, it's a source of income many will find attractive. Especially those who grew up commoners. Certainly, it would be better than starving."

"Actually, dear," Verenia said. "I've been thinking that we may need to modify Fourth Year. At the moment, only the more gifted students are invited back to Fourth Year, as the ordinary students are unlikely to be able to handle the more advanced spells. What if we had a practical version of Fourth Year for the less talented students who want to learn useful ways of using their abilities to earn money, like levitating blocks for buildings, as you just mentioned, and anything else we can come up with."

Perenius was nodding. "That's a very good idea, niece. Your research center could work on ways of using magic in practical, everyday settings, Kyron, and then the normal students who ordinarily wouldn't make Fourth Year would have something useful to do and a way of earning a living once they leave."

Kyron smiled around the room. "That sounds like a very clever idea. And a workable one. I want you all to start thinking
